Behind mETH Protocol: Edmund Chua, Head of Protocol

Most people know him from his X trading challenges and insights on DeFi_Maestro, but Edmund actually started as a co-founder of a crypto mining firm early in the space, before moving into research at a crypto VC and advising several DeFi protocols. A longtime DeFi user and active yield farmer, he later joined Mantle as a DeFi strategist, helping shape ecosystem growth and protocol direction.

In this debut edition of our Behind mETH Protocol series, we chat with Edmund to learn more about his journey and how that path led him to become Head of mETH Protocol. Most importantly, we dive into why he chose to focus on Ethereum liquid staking derivatives.

What Inspired You to Take on a Leadership Role at mETH Protocol?

''I spent a lot of time refining and building up the Mantle DeFi ecosystem. mETH adoption started off well with Double Dose, but growth was stagnant after that. I felt the LSD and LRT space had strong potential and wanted to push mETH and cmETH further.

I’ve always believed Ethereum is a core part of DeFi. Mantle’s DeFi structure was in a good place, so it felt like the right time to focus on something more chain-agnostic. That’s why I took on the role at mETH Protocol — to drive both institutional and user adoption.''

What Upcoming Product or Initiative Excites You the Most?

''mETH Protocol mainly built its empire on Mantle Network and is now integrated across 30+ leading dApps like Pendle, offering some of the best ETH yield opportunities in the space.

What’s next are deeper integrations with partners like Bybit, new deployments on ecosystems like Hyperliquid EVM, and the 5% Fixed Yield Vault for cmETH, which simplifies LRT usage for users looking for stable yield. We’re also watching AVS yields on EigenLayer and Symbiotic once rewards start streaming — that’ll be relevant for restaking strategy going forward.''

What Are Your Top Priorities for mETH Protocol Right Now?

“Building up institutional and ecosystem adoption of mETH and cmETH is a key focus. We’re also working on driving more value back to COOK token holders.

A big part of this involves setting up a strong distribution network for mETH and cmETH through various partners.

Ultimately, the goal is to establish a self-sustaining flywheel that can support future growth for the protocol.”

What Advice Would You Give to Someone Looking to Enter the DeFi Space or Build on mETH?

“If you want to build on mETH, just reach out — either to me directly or to anyone on the mETH Protocol team. DMs are open, and we’re always down to speak with other builders.

For those new to DeFi, start by using the more established blue-chip protocols. Get familiar with the different types of DeFi apps, build up a basic understanding, and take time to understand how the mechanics behind the protocols actually work.”

Who Do You Look Up to in the Crypto Space, and Why?

Honestly, there are a number of peers that I have plenty of respect for.

  • Guy from Ethena is a founder who plans several steps ahead and is extremely meticulous in how he executes campaigns and integrations.
  • TN from Pendle has the drive to constantly reiterate and improve his product, while still pushing the boundaries of Pendle as a yield market.
  • Yuhu from Kaito combines innovation and pragmatism in his implementations, and still remains extremely humble despite the popularity of his protocol.

There are a number of other founders I deeply respect, but these three probably top the list for me.
